90g Reef Tank - Invertebrates

Inverts are fun.  They are very interesting to watch and performs great cleanup.

Name Date Acquired Notes

Stenopus hispidus

Boxer shrimp

15 Mar '10

I just acquired a juvenile Boxer Shrimp from JL Aquatics.  The little guy is hiding currently so will only see how it does in a couple of days.

Paguristes cadenati

Scarlet hermit crab

19 Mar '10 I got two scarlet hermit crabs to help with the filamentous algae, and to clean up after feeding time.

Trochus spp.

Trochus snail

19 Mar '10 To add some variety herbivores I got a Trochus snail.  It is doing well and eating lots of algae.

Tectus spp.

Tectus snail

19 Mar '10 This is the other snail I added,  However even after a gentle 1.5 hour acclimatisation, the snail never moved since introduced to the aquarium.  I removed him this morning.  For now I will attribute it to a snail that was in bad shape to begin with, until I am proven otherwise.

Lysmata debelius

Fire shrimp

19 Mar '10 A beautiful shrimp, this one currently found a nice visible hiding spot and has already molten once.  Takes food readily and seems happy.

Ophiomastix variabilis

Black brittle star

19 Mar '10 A great scavenger, this brittle star has so acclimated to life in captivity that it currently sits in the open under a small overhang in the live rock, on the top of the tank.

Paguristes cadenati

Scarlet hermit crab

20 Mar '10 After looking at the activity levels of the two hermits I got, I decided I need two more.  This should suffice for the next month.

Turbo spp.

Turbo snail

20 Mar '10 Also realised I need two more snails, so I got two trusty Turbo snails.  Immediately after adding them they ate a quarter of the algae on my overflow.

Turbo spp.

Turbo snail

26 Mar '10 The turbo snails are really good algae grazers, so I decided to add two more.

Dolabella auricularia

Sea Hare

26 Mar '10 Ever since my first sea hare I had a fascination with these weird creatures.  It is with sadness that I have to report this guy died 2 days after adding to my tank.  Even after a lengthy 2.5 hour drip acclimatisation, I think the salinity shock from 1.017 to 1.026 in 2.5 hours was just too much.  I really dislike it when LFS's keep their water parameters so completely out of sync with normal reef values.

Mespilia globulus

Blue tuxedo urchin

10 Apr '10 These urchins do a great job of keeping coralline algae at bay, and open up the pores in the live rock for better denitrification.  As you can see, this guy is still happy as it has lots of decorations on its body.  When they are unhappy they start dropping their camouflage.

Holothuria spp?

Tigertail sea cucumber

14 Apr '10 I wanted a sea cucumber that will mop my substrate, but this sea cucumber is either too small or a different kind to what I had before, as it went underground when I initially placed it in the aquarium, and only surfaced on the 25th of April for the first time.

Lysmata wurdemanni

Peppermint shrimp

25 Apr '10 These peppermint shrimps are really cool.  You buy one only to never see it again as they disappear in the rock work.

Lysmata ambionensis

Pacific cleaner shrimp

25 Apr '10 To help my shark nose goby with his parasite infection (and the Foxface to which this parasite was passed), I acquired a cleaner shrimp.  Seems to have worked as the Foxface has no more parasites on him.

Odontodactylus spp?

Mantis Shrimp

25 Apr '10 I finally managed to find a nice mantis shrimp.  Obviously this predator is not suited for my reef tank, but I have a really nice refugium where he lives.

Dolabella auricularia

Sea Hare

25 Apr '10

I concluded my previous sea hare died due to the huge specific gravity difference.  This time I found a healthy speciment at another LFS, and their water parameters are much closer to mine.  So far this sea hare has moved all around the tank, feeding on the algae on the live rock and substrate.

I had to return it as I could not sustain it in my tank with algae.
