480g Predator Tank - Fish

I had lots of other fish in the previous 125g tank which all died. Since this is a new beginning, I am only listing the current fish in the 480g:

  Title Date Acquired Notes
Pterois volitans Pterois volitans
Voltans Lionfish
30 Sep '06 - 17 Oct '07

My favourite fish. When I purchased him he was still quite small. He at least tripled in volume since then.

The big tank has a calming effect on him, and he either perches on one of the outposts or swims up and down with/against the current.

This fish eats almost anything that drops in to the water. Once it actually spat water at me when I was teasing it with a piece of mussel.

The fish has a great personality and is clearly the boss of the tank. He does not bother the other tank mates, although the first week he chased the Foxface around.

UPDATE: 10 days before its death it started refusing food, perching most of the time on the bottom - very unusual behaviour.  A week after than he started swimming in spirals - no sense of direction.  Three days later I euthanised him as he was bumping his mouth into everything - it got very bloody and I was fearing for a bacterial infection.

Snowflake moray

An extremely outgoing eel, at feeding time this eel is really spectacular. It is not shy and will readily come out and verociously bite off lancefish from the feeding stick.

It's favourite pastime is to nibble my fingers instead of the food. Needless to say I do not share that enjoyment as it is really scary.

It is not really aggressive, however it is very active. No problem eating frozen food.

The only picture I have of my Zebra eel... This is a much more shy eel than the Snowflake. It is extremely peaceful and never bothers anything in the tank, though I am not sure whether it was hom of the Snowflake that ate my lobster...

This eel only accepts LM prawns, krill and mussel. It does not like lancefish or other foods.

Green Bird Wrasse

They say a Bird wrasse should be kept in a minimum aquarium size of about 380L - in my mind that is crazy. This fish was really unhappy in my old 440L (125g) tank - nervously pacing up and down...

Once moved to the big tank, it has changed in to a different fish. No more nervously pacing up and down the tank - now it shows a much more natural behaviour. It's personality is very close to that of a dog's. Whenever it ate too much, it will lie down on the sand bed resting.

At night this fish lies in a small crevice in the live rock or on the substrate, sleeping. It does not burrow like other wrasses.

A very cool show it puts on is when I feed my Choclolate chip starfish a mussel on a SeaVeggies clip. It will keep on trying endlessly to bite small pieces off from between the glass and the starfish's legs.

This beautiful wrasse was very small when I purchased it - about 3cm in total length. It has grown dramatically - as it should considering this little beast will become about 0.6m in length once fully grown.

It is very active and moves rubble around looking for small crustaceans.

Siganus vulpinus Siganus vulpinus
Foxface Rabbitfish
18 Jun '07

The latest addition to the stocking list - this Foxface was acquired to help control the filamentous algae growing on the live rock in the absence of other herbivorous grazers.

Initially the Lionfish chased it endlessly, causing it to become stressed. At night my two Anemone hermit crabs would severely damage its skin and fins, so I removed them. Since I removed the crabs this fish made friends with the Lionfish and is regaining its strength. Some malnutrition is still visible in the picture, but it is much better than before.

The Foxface eats hair algae, grape caulerpa, Cyanobacteria and even nibbled (disgustfully) on some Bryopsis. It also loves chaeto.

Comet
17 Feb '07

An extremely cryptic but breathtakingly beautiful fish - the Marine Betta or Comet. Once every 5-6 hours you might glimpse this fish swimming from one cave to the next - never coming out in to the open except during the night.

I have no idea how it stays alive as I have never seen it eat, but it is obviously doing just fine.

It is not really aggressive, but will chase away any and all fish coming close to it.

Tasseled Filefish

27 Sep '07 Moved to 480g tank. Eating well - very shy. Sometimes the Foxface mistake the fish for a piece of algae - one it nibbled at the filefish' mouth.

Eating very aggressively. Seems to be doing fine.  It actually eats out of my hand - when I try to feed the Tassled Filefish it will grab food out of my hand.
