145g Reef Tank - Tank Log

| 30 Sep '07 | Calcium Reactor Upgrade | A couple of weeks ago my Deltec PF501 Calcium Reactor finally gave in - the shaft/propellor cut away at the blastic bushing and thus stopped working. Replacement parts will take anywhere up to 3 months, and in 2 weeks time my Alkalinity dropped to 4dKH and Calcium to 340mg/L. So I had to take a drastic measure and purchased a Deltec PF601 Calcium Reactor. It is exactly the same as the PF501, just much bigger. I have just managed to set it up and so far it is running fine. |
| 7 Sep '07 | Lighting upgrade | I discovered my montipora was starting to grow upwards in a cup like fashion rather than a plate like structure. This, together with several other indicators prompted me to upgrade my lighting (8 x T5 54W). I purchased a Giesemann Infinity pendant that has 2 x T5 54W Actinic, 2 x T5 54W Aquablue+, 2 x 250W Giesemann Coral MH. I removed the canopy's lid and the new light fixture is hanging about 25cm above the water level. Go see the tank versions page for pictures showing the increase in lighting. |
| 21 Jul '07 | Livestock acquired | After numerous discussions with the guys over at ReefCentral and WetWebMedia, I decided the reason my Chromis died were not due to bad water quality or some spreading disease. So to replace the lost school I purchased 5 Anthias which is currently in QT. I also got a long spined urchin to replace my rock urchin. It is still a baby so I hope it does well. |
| 19 Jul '07 | Fish Died |
My second last chromis showed exactly the same signs as the chromis that died a month ago. It had some scale damage on its body, as well as weird fungus like growths on its fins. I moved it over to the QT tank, but it died within 8 hours. |
| 16 Jul '07 | Urchin Died | My Rock urchin just died. The past couple of days it started coming out in the daylight and just sitting on the substrate. This morning it was dead. I have no idea why it died. |
