145g Reef Tank - Other Photos

Some miscellaneous photos:

Title Date Of Picture Notes
Colt coral Retracted colt coral 3 Jul '06

When I initially acquired my first coral - a Colt coral - I was devastated to see it like this the whole time. The tankw as newly set up, and it kept on looking as if the coral was about to die.

People told me to be patient - it is a hardy coral. Well, as you can see from my coral photos it really took off.

Moral of the story - this is a hardy coral, just give it time.

Yellow Clown Goby Yellow Clown Goby 15 Apr '07

A small yellow clown goby, which disappeared mysteriously in my reef tank after about 2 weeks since I added him.

My guess is that he went the same place my other two small fishes went - into the stomach of either an anemone or my Boxer shrimp.

Moral of the story - never keep tiny fish in a tank with anemones and a Boxer shrimp.

Dolabella Dolabella Sea Hare 14 Aug '06

My sea hare which I really miss. It was a great animal and lasted several months. It dies one day without any reason - but while it was alive it was a really good algae grazer.

Mesenterial filaments Mesenterial filaments 17 Aug '06

I disturbed this mushroon once when I tried to frag it from the rock. From the harassment it spilled out its guts - also known as mesenterial filaments.

Couple of hours later it looked like normal again.

Bleached Porites Bleached Porites 20 Aug '06

The porites and christmas tree worms when I just got it. The porites was all bleached and the christmas worms small and unhappy.

Have a look at the coral section to see how well it has been doing ever since.

Caulerpa in Sump Caulerpa in Sump 20 Aug '06

The biggest mistake in my reefkeeping hobby - I added "cute little pink algae" to help with nutrient exporting.

Little did I know that stuff is impossible to remove from your tank once it gets in to your main display (and it will), and it overgrows and smothers everything.

Purple Tang with Fungus Purple Tang with Fungus 3 Sep '06

My Purple tang with huge blobs of fungus on it. This happened in QT when I could not get my nitrites below 5mg/L and Nitrates below 200mg/L.

This shows you that those levels will NOT kill a Purple Tang, Clownfish and Purple Firefish (the fish in the tank at the time), however it *does* severely stresses them.

The Purple Tang eventually recovered, but only to become too belligerent requiring it to be sold off.

Leather coral Polyps Leather coral Polyps 9 Sep '06

A closeup of a Leather coral's polyps.

Blue-striped nudibranch Blue-striped nudibranch 16 Sep '06

This blue-striped nudibranch was supposed to eat my red flatworms I had at the time. Problem is it cannot live in the high flow environments we usually have in our aquariums.

He could just not get a hold on the glass or rocks and eventually died in a couple of days' time.

Crinoid riding on Tunze Crinoid riding on Tunze 17 Sep '06

My first Crinoid playing on my Tunze Turbelle pump.

Very sad that he died due to my Green Brittle Star jumping and consuming it.

Lawnmower Blenny Lawnmower Blenny 27Sep '06

One of two lawnmower blennies I added to the tank - both died for unknown reasons.

Dragon Wrasse Searching Dragon Wrasse Searching 8 Oct '06

My dragon wrasse was looking for critters in the substrate just as I took this picture.

Pearl Goby Pearl Goby 8 Oct '06

A Pearl goby that quickly deteriorated. Maybe the cyanobacteria?

Purple Carpet Anemone Purple Carpet Anemone 4 Nov '06

A Purple carpet anemone. This fellow was on its way out (had ot for a week).

This is the only anemone my Ocellaris clownfish went in to - it took about 30 seconds for them to try and nestle in it.

Obviosuly the anemone was too small and deteriorated and just died.

White Carpet Anemone White Carpet Anemone 12 Nov '06

Another carpet anemone I tried. This one lasted about two months just to wither away and die too.

Acropora just purchased Acropora just purchased 22 Nov '06

The Acropora when I first purchased it. It is obviously a maricultured specimen.

Have a look at the corals section for the amazing growth it has shown under my T5 lighting.

Boxer Shrimp Molting Boxer Shrimp Molting 6 Jul '06

Boxer shrimp molting.

Euphyllia RTN Euphyllia RTN 7 Jun '06

This is Euphyllia that has shown RTN recently. Two heads died - only one is still alive.

Acropora RTN Acropora RTN 7 Jun '06

Acropora that showed RTN. Those two branches died. It seems to be much more healthy now after I raised my Calcium back from 270 to 380mg/L.

Regal Tang Regal Tang 9 Jul '06

Originally I had a nice Regal tang. This little fellow was healthy (though shy), but after a power failure all that changed and it died.

Open Brain Coral Open Brain Coral 16 Jul '06

An Open brain coral. The LFS said it would be fine, however my hermit crabs killed it in two nights.

Yellow/Purple Tang Yellow/Purple Tang 16 Jul '06

Purple and Yellow tang fighting with each other. I eventually took both back to the LFS as they never got along with each other.

Purple Firefish Purple Firefish 16 Jul '06

This hardy Purple Firefish disappeared one night together with my other small Ocellaris clownfish.

My guess is it was taken by an anemone or the Boxer shrimp.

Echinometra mathaei

Echinometra mathaei

Rock urchin

This urchin was very small when I added it to the tank. In the past couple of months it tripled in size. It is very healthy and loves to eat coralline.

Update: This urchin died on the 16th of July due to unknown reasons.
