145g Reef Tank - Fish
I had several other fish - many of which died in the beginning. Why they died I do not know - some maybe due to bad specimens, some due to predation and others a mystery. The current stocking list is as follow:

Synchiropus splendidus Green Mandarinfish |
15 Aug '06 |
Mandarins are supposedly very difficult to keep. This is not untrue, however a large tank with ample supply of cope and amphipods goes a really long way in supporting these fascinating fish. Mine is as fat as the day I bought him, indicating that he is getting a proper diet. I deliberately did not add any other competitors as meticulous as this one, in order to provide the best chance of survival. Yes I know - the two wrasses also eat pods but they are not as thorough as this mandarin, therefore missing many pods leaving enough for the mandarin to eat. The mandarin sleeps every night under a piece of live rock - different place every night. Some nights it plays in the stream generated by the Tunzes. This fish never bothers anything, and nothing in my tank bothers it. It is extremely peaceful and does its own thing. The mandarin never eats any dead food I add to the tank. |

Amphiprion ocellaris False Clown Anemonefish
|
23 Sep '06 |
This clown refused the two anemones as host. Instead it took shelter in my huge Colt coral. Since 2 months after I got it, it went straight in to the Colt coral and that is where it lives and sleeps. This fish is not aggressive towards any of the other fish in my tank, however dare I put my hand close to it - it bashes me with it's tail. It does not like other fish in it's territory. It eats everything I add to the tank - including mysis, brine, vegetable matter, krill, cyclopeeze etc. A clown fish is really much like Marlin and Nemo - they are really dumb. |

Marcropharyngodon bipartitus Splendid Leopard Wrasse |

The spectacular fish is also supposedly rather tricky to keep healthy. My specimen seems quite active and alert, eating very well. I guess the combination of live food growing in my refugium together with the fact that it eats frozen food such as brine, krill and mysis helps. Personality wise this is an interesting fish - always exploring the LR for tiny crustaceans to snack on. It never bothers any of my other fish and sleeps under the aragonite at night. |

Chromis atripectoralis Blackaxil Chromis
(One chromis left)
|
10 Sep '06 |
The chromis are social fish always schooling together. I used to have 5, but they all died off in the beginning. I was left with only three, after which the third one mysteriously died without warning. They are very active fish always swimming at the upper 3rd of the water column. They are also the only fish eating from the surface of the water - for example cyclopeeze. They eat pretty much anything and will even take an occasional nip at sushi nori. Personality is lacking but they make up for it in their beauty and activeness. |

Novaculichthys taeniourus Dragon Wrasse |
10 Sep'06 |
This is by far my most favourite fish. It is extremely naughty and I am sure once this juvenile has grown up, I will have my hands full. But in the mean time I am truly enjoying its charming and cute personality. It will swim up and down, into holes. through small cracks; it turns snails upside down, transports (unwilling) hermit crabs, throws around pieces of rubble searching for pods... I can spend hours watching it live out its naughty life. It eats mysis, krill, brine, fish meat, mussel, clam etc. Sometimes it will grab a large piece of meat and swim with it in its mouth - up and down - for many minutes on end. |

Zebrasoma desjardinii Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang |
17 Dec '06 |
I used to have a Purple Tang, which became way too aggressive for my reef tank so I sold it. But with the Purple tang gone, my algae was growing worse than ever. So I had to get another tang - and this guy fit the bill perfectly. Even though it is older than the Purple tang, it is much less aggressive. It co-exists fine with my Achilles' tang, and does not harass any of its tank mates. It eats everything I provide, and loves sushi nori on a SeaVeggies clip. It reacts to my presence in a peculiar way - swimming along with me and expanding its dorsal fin when I put my finger on the glass. |

Acanthurus achilles Achilles' Surgeonfish |
14 Jan '07 |
Another one of those difficult to feed fish, this one fortunately ate frozen preparations when I bought it. What a shock when I had to pay for it - it cost R1500! In the beginning the Sailfin tang harassed it a bit, but with time they learned to accept each other. This fish loves to play in the currents, and shares the same diet as the Sailfin tang. Once the tang got a cloudy eye - most probably from an encounter with the Sailfin tang, but it cleared in a couple of days after heavy feeding with vegetable matter soaked in vitamins. |

Pseudanthias squamipinnis Lyretail Anthias |

I acquired 5 Antias today to replace the school of Chromis I lost. Currently they are in the QT tank, so once moved over I'll post a photo. |

Oxycirrhites typus Longnose Hawkfish |
For a bit of diversity I wanted a hawkfish - something that does not swim the whole day. This is a very interesting little fish and seems to be doing fine. |
